Environmental auditing has developed in response to the strong need of the industry to show responsible care. Many companies are now shaping up to meet the principles for good environmental management as described in recent national and international standards and in the newly established EC Regulation on eco-management and audit scheme. Norsk Hydro is one of the companies that has established internal environmental audits as an integral part of its required management practices.

The paper gives a brief account of the EC Regulation and industry standards, it describes Hydro’s approach to environmental audits, and it outlines some ideas for further improvements.
